The Story of Tea
As some of us may know, tea (Chai, Té, Cha) started in China. There are many variations to the story I will tell, but I am going to tell you one of the most popular stories. Relax, and let us take a sip back in time.
Are you familiar with Emperor Shen Nong? Well, Shen Nong was what we would call today a Herbalist. Emperor Shen Nong dates back to 2737 B.C.E. Shen Nong was known for seeking cures and remedies for different ailments. He is a very significant figure in Chinese Medicine. Emperor Nong would try a plethora of different herbs that he came across throughout his daily adventures. One day, Shen Nong rested in his garden with a pot of boiling water on a makeshift stove. As he was resting, waiting for the water to boil, a strong gust of wind blew through his garden. The gust of wind caused a leaf from a nearby plant to land in his pot. Being the discoverer that he was, he drank it to see what would happen. After days and days of drinking this mystical leaf, he discovered many healing properties to this leaf. The tea leaf was of such benefit that he always drank a cup after trying new herbs. Throughout his searches for new herbs, there were times that he would drink something that was poisonous. To prevent himself from falling ill, he would follow each new herb he drank with a cup of tea.
